🔴 Derby bank stabbing: man pleads guilty to murder of Gurvinder Johal
Haybe Cabdiraxmaan Nur, 47, has pleaded guilty to murdering businessman Gurvinder Johal, 37, in a daylight stabbing at Lloyds Bank in Derby.
A man has admitted murdering businessman Gurvinder Singh Johal in a daylight stabbing at a Lloyds Bank in Derby city centre.
Haybe Cabdiraxmaan Nur, 47, of Western Road, Normanton, appeared at Derby Crown Court today (21 August) where he pleaded guilty to murder. A Somali interpreter assisted as he entered his plea before Judge Shaun Smith KC, while members of Mr Johal’s family and friends watched from the public gallery.
The court heard Mr Johal, 37, was attacked just after 2.30pm on Tuesday 6 May inside the branch on St Peter’s Street. He was carrying bank holiday takings from his Hen and Chickens Bar and Grill in Shelton Lock at the time of the fatal assault.
Judge Smith told Nur that he would be sentenced on 29 October: “You will receive a life sentence. The term you are required to spend in custody will be determined on that date. Until then, you are remanded in custody.” The sentencing will begin from a starting point of 25 years, subject to any mitigating or aggravating factors.
Detective Inspector Tony Owen, of the East Midlands Special Operations Unit, said he was “pleased that Mr Johal’s family will not have to sit through a trial.”
Janine McKinney, Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS East Midlands, said: “This was a truly shocking crime committed in broad daylight in a busy city centre bank. While the whole community has been affected, our thoughts and deepest sympathies remain with Mr Johal’s family, friends and loved ones.”
Mr Johal had recently returned from a family trip to India with his wife, children and extended relatives.
Well, that’s all for now. But until our next article, please stay tuned, stay informed, but most of all stay safe, and I’ll see you then.
